Sedona: Land of Red Rocks & Vortices…

Picture

Driving into Sedona was pretty amazing, red rocks rising out of the landscape as we drove down into the valley of Sedona.

Sedona is a tourist-ified resort town, nestled amongst Arizona’s red rock & green forest mountains. For decades this has been a place of pilgrimage for outdoorsy types and more recently those who dwell in the other realm. It is a haven for crystal healers, layers-on-of-hands, psychics, and artists.

According to the metaphysicists, this stunning landscape of Sedona is dotted with otherworldly ‘Vortices’ that channel esoteric energies into the physical realm and provide a place for healing, spiritual growth and an opportunity for enlightened tour operators.
Here is a map too!

(A Vortex Healing Tour costs $250 pp in case you are wondering!).

Needless to say Jade & Greg have shifted to a new plane of existence; donations are accepted willingly. Our new names are Bodi & Tinkerbell.

Our main activities were Hiking (see our spectacular pics of Cathedral Rock Climb & Devils Bridge Walk), and exploring the fascinating petroglyphs/rock painting sites attributed to the Ancient Anasazi Puebloan people.

The landscape defies description so I will rely on our photos and videos to do it justice.
(see the short video below about our Cathedral Rock experience….)

The most interesting petrography site we visited is known as V-Bar-V after the Cattle Ranch which once stood on its grounds. The rock wall is copiously inscribed with images of animals, human figures and abstract symbols.

According to Navajo interpreters the symbols serve as communication between migrating groups of Anasazi, as well as an agrarian calendar. Two small rocky outcrops cast shadows upon the petroglyphs which change with the suns’ movement and indicate the times of solstices & season, which guide planting and migration routes.
