Our first evening we were surprised that everything in the restaurant menu was in English, most of the taxi drivers and waiters speak English....this didn’t even happen in Oaxaca City!
We found out this area was developed in the last 10 years into resorts for Canadians and Mexicans. There are direct flights from Toronto, and so many retired Canadian expats living here in gated communities or at the resorts. The names are fairly ludicrous like Secrets, Dreams….one only feels that the next resort needs to be named Lies.*
Unfortunately many newcomers here don't seem to want to even TRY to speak Spanish....its a little disrespectful. I honestly wonder how hard is it for someone to say 'Gracias' even if it is the only word you learn!
In the restaurant one night we overheard some rather rude foreigners yell at a mexican family near them asking in loud english "What is that drink?!" The family seemed stunned and didnt seem to be able to speak english so they answered "Cerveza" (beer). I was absoultely stunned when the foreigner proceeded to repeat the word as if it was new. Its on EVERY menu in town next to the english, its not that hard and you MUST have heard this before?!?!?!
So that was a snapshot of life in a tourist town.
Whilst in La Crucecita Huatulco we got taken in by a local group of underground artists called The Collectivo led by Chaco and Gesus. We did artisenal mezcal tasting with them (up to 60% alcohol -oh god a sip was too much!) and invited us to yoga sessions and film screenings.
We took them up on the ‘intellectual movie night’ where they played the film ‘Bad Batch’ by a very interesting director Ana Lily Amirpour. Afterwards we got to comment on the film although I didn’t understand their thoughts (they spoke in Spanish) and they probably didn’t understand mine as I spoke in English!
(If you'd like to join them for mezcal, film or yoga email me here)
I was excited to have 2 days of diving which was great fun and saw some interesting coral and new animals. I'll have a new post on this next!
Greg decided to get up and walk around the National Park at sunrise, he found a lovely beach to watch the sunrise from. Check it out below!

Now we are flying to Mexico City and then rerouting to the Chiapas region, heading to San Cristobel de la Casas where the temperature is 9degress. So 21 degrees less than Huatulco....moy frio!
*No we didn’t stay at these all-inclusive resorts or step foot in them - instead we stayed near town where locals lived in a lovely cheap hotel called Hotel Arenas del Pacifico
Highly recommended dive shop: Huatulco Dive Centre
