Ruins of Nestor’s Palace, Beaches & Methoni

Methoni & Surroundings

We based ourselves in Methoni and drove out from there to see the beach, ruins and more!

Here are a few places you should visit when going to this part of Greece.

Voidikilia Beach

As soon as we got to our hotel room, Greg flooded it by taking a shower. Greek plumbing! Seriously there was water everywhere all over the floor like a small lake, I grabbed a staff member who then upgraded us to a much nicer room : )Voidikilia Beach – Beach day! We were recommended this beautiful beach, Voidikilia, however due to early summer tides (it was June) the water was FREEZING!
Lovely warm day, with fresh breezes so we sat a while and I braved the waters a couple of times before needing to thaw out in the hot sun

Gialova

After getting a lovely tan we headed for lunch and stumbled upon a beautiful beachside town called Gialova

Not in any guidebooks we could find, it is more of a Greek tourist town that seems to consist of one road down a beach, where you could find a handful of designer shops, spas and gelato stores! (all things that are good).

Plus the requisite restaurants on the beach. We ate our best meal at one of these. Amazing fresh seafood with a modern twist on traditional Greek cuisine whilst watching the sea, toes in the sand (and holding our hats).

Nestor’s Palace Ruins

We found the ruins of Nestor’s Palace from Homers Odyssey.

Homer tells us that Telemachus:

went to Pylos and to Nestor, the shepherd of the people, and he received me in his lofty house and gave me kindly welcome, as a father might his own son who after a long time had newly come from afar: even so kindly he tended me with his glorious sons. (Source: Wikipedia)

King Nestor sent his fleet of 90 ships to Troy to rescue Helen and was described by Homer as a wise, eloquent and peaceful ruler. The ruins of his palace are found on top of a hill overlooking the area. It is exciting to note that we believe these ruins are around the right time period for Nestor’s life and thereby gives creedence to The Odyssey and Homer’s other works some real life grounding.

There was a huge fire and the Palace burned down and abandoned. However archeologists realised that the clay tablets for stock taking & accounting were fortified & fired by the heat and buried in the ruins. These tablets were dug up and gave archeologists the key to unlocking Linear B script. There is a handy museum which explains the amazing linguist who solved Linear B.

Also to note Piet de Jong who did all the Palace watercolour reconstructions (and fired my imaginations) was not only an archeologist illustrator but a  fascinating figure. You may be familiar with his work in the Palace of Minos, Knossos Crete. Read more about him here.

Methoni

Back in Methoni and we spent the evening exploring the Venetian ruins at the Harbour. An amazing military fort full of collapsed underground tunnels and parapets!

Sunset was a great time to visit and have the ruins to ourselves.
We earned our icecream this day (two ruins, a museum, and beach!) and then headed to dinner to try some homemade moussaka.
